Phase 1: I’m Happy Because I’m Safe

happysafe-1 Background Family violence and abuse continue are serious, ongoing issues that afflict every Inuit community in Canada at rates much higher than those in the south. Children are one of the most vulnerable groups to become impacted by violence and abuse or become victims. Data collected by the Qanuippitali Inuit Health Survey in Nunavut (2012), indicate that:

  • Thirty-one per cent of respondents experienced severe physical abuse as children; and
  • Fifty-two per cent of women and 22 per cent of men reported having experienced severe sexual abuse during childhood.

Although some services exist, the needs of Inuit children are not currently being met in the areas of mental health services, social services policies and practice, the justice system, shelters, or culturally appropriate services of any kind. Promising practices exist, but there are few and not well utilized. Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada has been very active in developing awareness campaigns and resources to help communities address family violence and sexual abuse. The I’m Happy Because I’m Safe campaign has been developed to promote the protection of Inuit children and reduce the incidence of violence and child abuse.

Pauktuutit is asking communities across Inuit Nunangat to participate in a colouring contest to raise awareness of violence prevention of Inuit children. In fall of this year children will be invited in all 53 Inuit communities to participate in a colouring contest.

Community partners such as schools and stores will be asked to participate by helping coordinate a colouring contest in their area. Pauktuutit will distribute activity kits to communities that include contest instructions, colouring pages featuring the campaign logo, crayons, and prizes. The winners will be selected by the local partner coordinating the contest. Prizes will include campaign promotional materials such as t-shirts, frisbees, stickers, and tattoos.  Prize winning selections should be displayed in a prominent location to enhance the campaign’s messaging.

We appreciate your cooperation and support for this important project. Together, we can help children have safe and happy homes! Please contact Pauktuutit if you have any questions or comments.
