FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 27, 2014 (Ottawa, ON) “On behalf of all Inuit women across Canada, as President of Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada I send our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Loretta Saunders,” said Rebecca Kudloo. “She was a bright shining light who loved and was loved by her family and many friends. Our hearts are with everyone in Nunatsiavut and we share your shock and grief. We send Loretta’s family and loved ones strength and courage to face the days and years ahead.” she added.

The Board of Directors met by teleconference today and held a moment of silence for Loretta Saunders. The Board also expressed the hope that Loretta Saunders’ thesis on murdered and missing women will be made available to honour her and her important work.

“On behalf of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, I wish to extend our sincerest condolences to the friends and family of Loretta Saunders,” said National Inuit Leader, Terry Audla, President of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami. “The impacts of this heartbreak extend across Inuit Nunangat and, indeed, across Canada; it is beyond tragic to witness such a senseless loss of a bright life.”

“Our hearts go out to the family. As individuals and as a whole we have all been affected by these tragic and senseless acts of violence. Like too many of us, I am also a survivor of these tragedies. My daughter was murdered by her partner in 1993. She was only 21 years old. We still miss her terribly and think of her every day,” said Charlotte Wolfrey, Pauktuutit’s regional Director for Nunatsiavut.
