Pauktuutit is pleased to announce a partnership with the Canadian Women’s Foundation through their Violence Prevention Program. This year-long project is designed to collect and record Inuit women’s experiences in the mining community of Baker Lake, Nunavut. It will conduct an initial gender-based analysis (GBA) on the social determinants of Inuit women’s health in relation to resource extraction. The project will contribute to a better understanding of the impacts of mining on Inuit women, including discrimination, harassment, sexual violence and exploitation and abuse. In addition, this work will help Pauktuutit to engage in necessary dialogue with resource extraction companies, government, land claims organizations and regulatory bodies such as the Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB).
Gathering this information is key to identifying risk-prevention measures and to promoting women’s health and wellbeing in relation to resource extraction activities. Pauktuutit acknowledges the Canadian Women’s Foundation and all its generous donors for this opportunity to work towards ending violence against Inuit women and girls.
