It’s not breaking tradition if women have always done it

Description: Living on the land in the North called for doing what needed to be done. By everyone. Although traditional gender roles and expectations existed — men typically hunted and harvested, while women cooked and cared for children — the realities of individual families meant that wives, mothers, sisters, and daughters did what was needed in the moment, even if it wasn’t “traditional”. In this episode of Our Stories, produced by Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada, host Natalie Ittinuar speaks with women from across Inuit Nunangat about their experiences with gender roles both in the past and today.
