In 2015, Pauktuutit received funding through the federal Urban Aboriginal Strategy to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the economic participation of Inuit women across Inuit Nunangat. The goal of the project was to engage diverse stakeholders in each region of the North to explore and categorize the barriers that Inuit women face in securing sustainable employment, through entrepreneurship or in the workplace. In this way, Pauktuutit would be able to build partnerships to collaboratively determine priorities and recommendations for action to increase the engagement of Inuit women in the Arctic economy. The final result of this project is the Angiqatigik strategy.

The strategy is a reference on the needs, challenges and goals of Inuit women as they build their futures, provide for their families and contribute to their communities. The information and recommendations presented have been collected from Inuvialuit, Nunavut, Nunavik and Nunatsiavut regions, with input from more than 37 organizational stakeholders and 145 Inuit women. It is Pauktuutit’s intention that this strategy be used to raise awareness and to inform governments, educational institutions, service providers and the private sector across the North in planning to increase the engagement of Inuit women. It is only through the development of policies, programs, training and services that address the unique responsibilities and barriers faced by Inuit women that we will be able to support their equal participation in the social and economic development of Inuit Nunangat.

WEBINAR

• Webinar: Engaging Inuit Youth around Sexually Transmitted and Blood-Borne Infections (STBBIs)

Participants at our sexual health forum in November 2016 identified the need for age-appropriate, sexual health information for youth as a priority to addressing sexually transmitted blood borne infections (STBBIs) within the Inuit population. Therefore, these videos have been developed to promote the use of condoms and regular testing to reduce the burden of STBBIs within the youth population.

The messaging, targeted at youth, was developed and filmed through a collaborative process with local Inuit students attending the Nunavut Sivuniksavut (NS) Program in Ottawa. The NS students felt the best way to reach their peers was to create a video they could share on social media, that is funny and engaging versus a resource that is fear-based.

Pauktuutit’s sexual health program began in the late 1980’s when news of the first Inuk woman diagnosed with HIV became public. Pauktuutit first passed a resolution during its 1984 Annual General Meetings (AGM) calling attention to Inuit sexual health issues and to the need for information and educational materials on sexual health that met the needs of Inuit communities. Later, in 1990, an AGM resolution called for an AIDS workshop in the North. In May 1995, Pauktuutit conducted the first National Inuit HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections Workshop, which served to raise awareness among Community Health Representatives (CHRs) about the issues and risk behaviours associated with HIV/AIDS and STIs. In 1998, with financial support from Health Canada, Pauktuutit began a pan-Arctic HIV/AIDS health prevention and promotion program that produced and distributed HIV/AIDS-related materials in English and Inuktitut. Pauktuutit remains the only national organization focusing on specific Inuit HIV/AIDS issues and initiatives, and has gained national and international recognition and acclaim for its innovative and unique work.
