Did you know that you can have hepatitis C for many years and not know it? Many people don’t! Hepatitis C is spread through infected blood to blood contact, for example by sharing a toothbrush or a razor with someone who has it. Finding out if you have it or not is as simple as a quick blood test. If you don’t have hepatitis C there are simple things you can do to protect yourself. If you do, there are many treatments available. In many cases it can be cured.

This research report is the second of two documents dealing with the social impacts of mining activity near Qamani’tuaq (Baker Lake) on Inuit women and families in the community. The first report (March 2014) was based on interviews and qualitative data. This report deals with results of a questionnaire, with content developed in 2013 by Inuit women of Qamani’tuaq in the course of a week-long workshop.

The questionnaire was completed by 62 women, aged 19 years and older. The data deals with their experience, perceptions and feelings. While social impact research typically focuses on statistical indicators (rates at which services are engaged, facilities used, employment rates, training received, health statistics, etc.), there are considerable shortcomings to this approach. The quality of life experience is important. Regardless of what indicators may reveal, how women perceive and feel about their experiences are essential to appreciating impacts.

The issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women has generated national and international attention and concern over a number of years, and now the federal government will be holding a National Inquiry on the matter. Pauktuutit, with the support of Minister Carolyn Bennett and officials at Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada, held a four day pre-consultation meeting in Ottawa in February 2016 that brought together Inuit family members, representatives of a number of regional and national Inuit organizations, subject matter experts and others. This unprecedented meeting resulted in a comprehensive report with many recommendations on the mandate, composition, scope and process of the national inquiry. Participants also gave a name to the work to come: Nipimit Nanisiniq Finding Voice.

Since the creation of Pauktuutit in 1984, violence in Inuit communities has consistently been identified as a priority issue. The Strategic Plan for Inuit Violence Prevention and Healing is based on research reports and policy recommendations from more than 20 years of Inuit-centered approaches to responding to, healing from and eliminating violence in Inuit communities in Canada.

Mining companies can’t do everything themselves. Whether they are just beginning to explore an area or have been in production for years, mining companies rely on the products and services of many other businesses. Pauktuutit wants to know what this means for Inuit businesswomen and women interested in starting a business. What are the opportunities for Inuit women to do business with the mining industry? To answer this question, Pauktuutit created a project to find out where mining projects are in Inuit Nunangat, who the mining companies are and what they need to buy from other businesses. The ‘virtual quilt’  is designed to give voice and expression to Inuit women’s unique experiences and lasting impacts of Residential Schools as a national Residential Schools commemoration initiative. This project was recommended by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and was funded by Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada. The project, entitled TRC – Virtual Quilt was a project for communities that are interested in producing an art piece that reflects the Inuit experience of Residential Schools. The final outcomes of this project are intended to document and preserve the legacy of these experiences and to help begin a dialogue of reconciliation and healing with all Canadians.
