Pauktuutit is pleased to announce a partnership with the Canadian Women’s Foundation through their Violence Prevention Program. This year-long project is designed to collect and record Inuit women’s experiences in the mining community of Baker Lake, Nunavut. It will conduct an initial gender-based analysis (GBA) on the social determinants of Inuit women’s health in relation to resource extraction. The project will contribute to a better understanding of the impacts of mining on Inuit women, including discrimination, harassment, sexual violence and exploitation and abuse. In addition, this work will help Pauktuutit to engage in necessary dialogue with resource extraction companies, government, land claims organizations and regulatory bodies such as the Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB).
Gathering this information is key to identifying risk-prevention measures and to promoting women’s health and wellbeing in relation to resource extraction activities. Pauktuutit acknowledges the Canadian Women’s Foundation and all its generous donors for this opportunity to work towards ending violence against Inuit women and girls.

This sounds like a very interesting project! When is the research in Baker Lake scheduled to start?
Thanks for your comment! We are currently planning and have yet to decide the dates. The first focus group will take place in the fall and we will keep you posted.
I am interested in taking part in this research project…I have a daughter and 2 beautiful granddaughters and have numerous nieces who will be joining the job force soon. I know violence towards women is an issue in Baker Lake and I would like to see that something pro-active and positive will come out of this project, I also have a one and only grandson who I cherish like his sisters so we need to find balance way to deal with the issues. ‘Thank you for taking the time to address violence against women and girls. I wish you all the best in your work.
Sincerely,
Ruth K. Kaluraq
