OTTAWA – JULY 26, 2021 – Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada’s President and Board of Directors proudly supported the installation of Mary Simons as the 30th Governor General of Canada today. Mary Simon is the first Inuk Governor General in Canada’s history. As they continue to work from home due to COVID-19, board members and staff tuned in to watch today’s historic event.

“Inuit women from every corner of Canada watched today’s ceremony. We are thrilled for Mary Simon and feel her appointment is well-earned. She is a very accomplished Inuk woman,” said Rebecca Kudloo, President of Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada. “We also see today’s ceremony as a step towards reconciliation with Inuit women. In order for change to happen, Inuit women need to not only be in the room where decisions are made but also at the table and able to speak.”

Mary Simon was born in Kangiqsualujjuaq, Nunavik, Quebec, and has accomplished a great deal since then. For more than 40 years, Mary Simon has advocated for Inuit rights and culture in Canada and abroad. As a former Canadian Ambassador for Circumpolar Affairs, Canadian Ambassador to Denmark, President of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, and the Senior Negotiator in the Self Determination process on behalf of Makivik Corporation, we are confident she will represent Inuit with passion and success. She will continue to be an inspirational role model for Inuit women and girls.

Pauktuutit looks forward to working with the Governor General in her future role and has the utmost confidence in her abilities.
