Pauktuutit Observes National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women

December 6, 2013 (Ottawa, ON) Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada encourages everyone to observe the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women on December 6 as an important day to remember and honour those Inuit women and girls who have lost their lives to violence.

Many Inuit communities and organizations participate in December 6th events. These events are occurring with Pauktuutit’s 30th Anniversary on the horizon. Violence and abuse prevention has been one of the top three priorities for Inuit women since Pauktuutit’s incorporation. Pauktuutit president Rebecca Kudloo reflected on this milestone and noted that “The amount of violence and victimization of Inuit women and girls continues to occur at an alarming rate here in Canada.”

Among the key vulnerabilities of Inuit women and girls to violence are overcrowded housing and the lack of housing options, poverty, lack of employment and/or skills, substance abuse and the lasting effects of colonization, Residential Schools and intergenerational trauma.

The abuse prevention department of Pauktuutit is currently involved in a two-year project for Status of Women Canada that engages men and boys in reducing violence against women and girls.  “Together as allies,” Kudloo remarked “we can reduce violence in Inuit communities.”
